The term Internet of Things (IoT) has become popular over the last few years. We have seen several advancements related to IoT, which includes the launch of several Wearable devices. Nowadays, wearable devices such as smartwatches make extensive use of IoT. Moreover, we have health devices that tap the rich potential of IoT. 

The main problem for layman point of view is that they often get confuse IoT with Internet of Everything (IoE) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technologies. While IoE is the superset of IoT, M2M is regarded as a subset of IoT. In this article, we will examine the differences between these three terms.

Internet of Everything (IoE)

The term Internet of Everything (IoE) mainly evolved behind the backdrop of the emergence of IoT. It is mainly associated with the aim of telecom giant Cisco's drive to formulate a new domain for core marketing. The technology consists of four important elements such as People, Things, Data, and Processes. 

You can simply consider People as end-nodes, which are connected across the web to share various content and data. It includes social media and sensors. The term Things denotes physical sensors and devices including few other items that are used to generate data such as a thermostat.

In the case of Data, the fetched information are carefully verified into a set of useful information. You will be able to activate decisions and control systems automatically. The main aim of the Processes is to leverage connectivity between data, people and things to add unique value.

In future, the emergence of Internet of Digital, Internet of Humans, Industrial Internet of Things, and other related technologies form part of Internet of Everything (IoE).

Internet of Things (IoT)

Coined by Kevin Ashton, the term Internet of Things (IoT) provides an ability to not only connect devices but also to generate, transmit and receive data. For example, wearables provides an ability for establishing connectivity in a unique style. You can make use of a mobile app rto establish connectivity with your wearable device. According to experts, the term IoT will continue to grow within the next few years rapiudly. Some of the instances of IoT are connected cars, blood pressure monitors, smart meters, and cities.

On the other hand, Machine to Machine (M2M) is a subset to IoT, and it mainly represents the closed communication between physical objects. The huge spike in te growth of smartphones and tablets has created a need to transmit data across various systems. The M2M name is provided to next generation technologies such as interaction between machines without human intervention. You will be able to make use of MEM in telemetry, robotics and traffic control systems.

The term IoE, IoT and MEM have created a huge confusion among common people. If you are a tech savvy person, you will be able to understand the concepts easily. However, if you are a beginner, it will be difficult to grasp the meaning. Going forward, the world is moving towards connected devices. Hence, it is advisable to learn the basic purpose behind the evolution of the above technologies.
